Acceptable Use Policy
Effective date: 28/04/2026
This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") forms part of the Terms of Service and applies to everyone who uses the ContractShield Service.
We keep this policy short and practical. The underlying principle: don't use ContractShield to do anything illegal, abusive, or that undermines the Service for other users.
1. Prohibited content and activity
You must not use the Service to upload, process, store, or transmit content that:
- is unlawful, defamatory, obscene, harassing, or infringes third-party rights (including intellectual property, confidentiality, or privacy rights);
- you are not authorised to share (for example, a contract you received under an NDA without rights to share it with a processor);
- contains malware, viruses, or other harmful code;
- contains special category personal data (health data, biometric data, data about criminal convictions, etc.) unless we have confirmed in writing that we can support your use case;
- contains payment card data, government-issued ID numbers (e.g. full National Insurance numbers, passport numbers), or similarly sensitive identifiers, unless incidental to a contract and minimised where possible.
2. Misuse of the Service
You must not:
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other accounts, or any underlying system;
- probe, scan, or test the vulnerability of the Service except under our responsible-disclosure programme (see Security);
- interfere with or disrupt the Service, including via denial-of-service attacks, excessive automated requests, or bulk submissions intended to degrade performance;
- circumvent rate limits, authentication, or pricing mechanisms;
- resell or sublicense the Service, or use it to provide a competing service to third parties, without our prior written consent;
- use the Service to build a competing product, or to train, fine-tune, or benchmark a competing AI model;
- scrape, harvest, or mass-export data from the Service other than through features we expressly provide for that purpose;
- misrepresent your identity or affiliation when using the Service.
3. Fair use
The Pro subscription includes up to 100 contract reviews per calendar month. This limit is set well above normal business usage and is intended to prevent misuse. You must not:
- share your account with third parties to exceed the limit;
- process contracts on behalf of third parties (for example, operating a paid review service using a single ContractShield account);
- use multiple accounts to circumvent the fair use limit;
- use automated tools to submit contracts at scale beyond what a normal business would generate.
If your usage approaches or exceeds the fair use limit, we will contact you to discuss. Legitimate high-volume users can move to a bespoke plan. Where usage appears abusive, we may throttle or suspend access in accordance with Section 6 (Enforcement).
4. AI-specific restrictions
You must not use the Service to:
- generate content that is deceptive, fraudulent, or intended to manipulate another party (for example, using AI Output to craft misleading amendments presented as a counterparty's own);
- provide legal advice to third parties while representing that such advice has been verified by a solicitor, unless it has;
- evaluate matters where an incorrect output would create significant risk to life, health, or safety. ContractShield is a commercial contract-review tool and is not suitable for high-stakes safety, medical, or similar decisions.
5. Compliance with law
You are responsible for your own compliance with the laws that apply to you, including:
- data protection and privacy laws (including UK GDPR) in respect of personal data you upload;
- export controls and sanctions, including UK and applicable international sanctions regimes;
- sector-specific regulations that may apply to your business.
6. Enforcement
If we reasonably believe you have breached this AUP, we may:
- investigate, including by reviewing relevant logs and (where necessary) account content;
- suspend or limit your access, with or without notice, proportionate to the breach;
- remove offending content;
- terminate your account under our Terms of Service;
- report unlawful activity to the relevant authorities.
Where reasonable, we'll contact you first to give you a chance to cure the breach. Where the breach is serious or ongoing, we may act immediately.
7. Reporting
If you see something that breaches this AUP — including content that shouldn't be on the Service — please email abuse@contractshield.co.uk.
8. Changes
We may update this AUP from time to time. The current version is always published at https://contractshield.co.uk/acceptable-use.
